Systematic revision of the Japanese freshwater snail

چکیده

Semisulcospira is a freshwater snail genus highly divergent in the ancient Lake Biwa, Japan, with history of ~4 million years. Although shell morphology, karyotype and molecular phylogeny have been well studied, systematic status several non-monophyletic species remains uncertain. In this study, we evaluated taxonomic accounts previously identified as decipiens, S. habei relatives. We examined genetic relationships using genome-wide SNP data elucidated morphological variation among these Random Forest classification. Morphological between name-bearing type decipiens newly collected specimens were also evaluated. characteristics effectively discriminated nine clusters, correlation morphology substrates was elucidated. revised habei, arenicola, nakasekoae ourensis synonymised multigranosa, yamaguchi, dilatata under fluvialis nakasekoae. described two new species, elongata sp. nov. cryptica nov., redefined phylogroups lacustrine niponica-group nakasekoae-group. Traits exhibiting intraspecific different flow velocity may indicate trophic adaptations. The habitat-related has certainly caused confusion species. drainage contributes to increasing diversity genus, generating ecological isolation riverine habitats. Multiple paternity in the freshwater snail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum

Mating multiply may incur costs, such as exposure to predators and to sexually transmitted diseases. Nevertheless, it may be favored, in spite of these costs, as a way to increase the genetic diversity of offspring through fertilization by multiple males. Here, we tested for multiple paternity in a freshwater snail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum), which is host to several species of sterilizing trem...

Modeling freshwater snail habitat suitability and areas of potential snail-borne disease transmission in Uganda.

Geographic information system (GIS-based modeling of an intermediate host snail species environmental requirements using known occurrence records can provide estimates of its spatial distribution. When other data are lacking, this can be used as a rough spatial prediction of potential snail-borne disease transmission areas. Furthermore, knowledge of abiotic factors affecting intra-molluscan par...

Parasite-induced alteration of diurnal rhythms in a freshwater snail.

The trematode Microphallus sp. alters the behavior of its snail intermediate host, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, in ways that seem to increase transmission to its final host, e.g., waterfowl, and decrease the probability of being eaten by other predators, e.g., fish. The parasite seems to cause the snail to move from the top to the bottom of rocks at about 0900 hr. Waterfowl feed predominantly befo...
